L-carnitine can transport fatty acids to the mitochondria, with the consequent production of energy. Its ability to increase metabolic efficiency in the use of lipids and in particular the increase of the possibility of burning body fat during exercise, is particularly appreciated by athletes both in endurance and strength training. Moreover, it seems to have anti-catabolic properties and to be able to increase resistance to fatigue.

At central nervous system level, it interacts with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, playing an anti-oxidant role. Carnitine is also attributed vascular and cardioprotective properties. It increases peripheral vasodilation contributing to improve oxygen flow and distribution. Carnitine promotes the lowering of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood and raises HDL values, reducing the risk of deposits in the blood vessels. Its ability to convert fat into energy and reduce the formation of lactic acid is widely exploited in the world of sport to improve athletic performance.

Choline is a molecule essential to the body. Our body can synthesize it only partially and it is therefore necessary to introduce it into the body via the diet. It intervenes in synthesizing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, indispensable to the correct function of the parasympathetic nervous system. Choline is involved in slowing down the heart rate, stimulating the secretion of the salivary, gastric and pancreatic glands, supporting intestinal peristalsis and all digestive functions in general. Choline is also essential for the integrity and fluidity of cell membranes, since it acts as a precursor of the phosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid. Choline contributes to normal cardiovascular function, fighting the effects of homocysteine, whose values are correlated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis. Choline is involved in the metabolism and transport of lipids and cholesterol. According to several studies, choline also has anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties as well as hepatoprotective properties against some hepatotoxic drugs. An adequate intake of choline causes a reduction in concentrations of inflammatory markers and inflammatory cytokines, involved in the inflammatory process.

Finally, caffeine can improve the use of fat to produce energy. Caffeine promotes the release of epinephrine that stimulates the release of the stored fat, and increases cyclic AMP that activates enzymes such as lipase. A better use of fat during physical exercise allows saving muscle glycogen that is limited and extremely connected to the aerobic performance. It also has a thermogenic effect. Caffeine can stimulate the central nervous system, reducing fatigue but also blocking adenosine that has a calming effect on nerve cells. Moreover, it probably decreases the production of lactic acid that is responsible for the feeling of fatigue.
