MICELLAR+

MICELLAR+ is a source of slow-release protein to stimulate protein synthesis and limit catabolism.

MICELLAR+ is composed of milk casein, which has a good amino acid profile and a high biological value.

The casein is found in milk in the form of large spherical aggregates called micelles. These micelles are made up of other smaller spherical particles, called submicelles, which in turn are made up of many casein molecules. We know of 4 different casein protein types: αs1-casein, αs2-casein, β-casein and k-casein. These casein proteins, except for k-casein, tend to precipitate in the presence of calcium ions. To prevent this from happening, the structure of the k-casein is used, which acts as a shield to protect the other proteins from the calcium ions and makes sure that the various micelles repel each other.

In the stomach, digestive enzymes (proteases) separate these micelles before digesting the proteins that are concentrated inside of them – a process that requires some time to complete. By doing so, they guarantee a slower and more constant supply of amino acids in the blood, which is further proof of their anti-catabolic properties. Because of this, it has a lower insulin index and a greater satiating power as compared to the equivalent amount of other protein supplements, such as whey protein.

The slow release of amino acids is what allows the body to maintain an anabolic state in muscle tissue for long periods of time, thereby suppressing the catabolic state.

The caseins are usually commercially available in two forms: calcium caseinate and micellar casein.

MICELLAR+ uses the micellar casein with the natural form of casein.
