Omega 3

Why are omega-3 food supplements important? Here are some information that can help you understand what makes omega-3 essential for a balanced diet and why our food supplements are unique.

Omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids are defined as essential polyunsaturated fatty acids because the human body cannot synthesize them and they must therefore be taken through the diet. The main omega-3 fatty acids are α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is mainly obtained from some vegetables, while EPA and DHA are more present in foods of animal origin, particularly in the oil of cold sea fish.

Omega-3s play a key role in various tissues in our body and perform many functions:

  • are precursors of eicosanoids or superhormones, molecules involved in the inflammatory response and having direct action on many organs and tissues
  • contribute to the construction of cell membranes
  • support the cardiac, cognitive and visual functions
  • promote the restoration of metabolic parameters (pressure, cholesterol, etc.) in many pathological conditions

Currently, in the Western diet, the intake of fats is qualitatively unbalanced in favour of the omega-6 intake: overall we take a quantity of omega-6 fatty acids up to 20 times higher than that of omega-3s.

Scientific research has shown that an increase in the omega-6 and omega-3 ratio with a higher amount of omega-6 has disadvantageous effects on different metabolic conditions, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular risk, and weight control. Therefore, it can be very useful to re-establish the balance between the concentration of omega-6s and omega-3s.

As confirmed by scientific studies, it is important to follow a balanced diet and, when necessary, to take advantage of omega-3 supplements. A healthy diet together with the use of omega-3 supplements allows to restore the correct ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in our body.

The right ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 is essential, because it ensures a balanced production of pro- and anti-inflammatory substances, improves the setting of many metabolic parameters (such as blood pressure), promotes a stable and balanced concentration of lipids in the blood and, modulating the permeability of cell membranes, facilitates the passage of nutrients within the cells.

Since a deficiency of omega-6s is rare, to ensure the right ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 dietary supplementation is normally limited to omega-3s, especially EPA and DHA.
