Probiotics commonly used in supplements have a limited shelf life, as they are sensitive to moisture, temperature, and gastro-intestinal conditions. These factors limit their shelf life within the product, resulting in a massive decrease in the initial microbial load. The progress of scientific research, cellular and molecular biology has made it possible to identify and select particular strains of probiotic bacteria - including Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis Natto - able to withstand unfavourable conditions and survive down to the intestine where, thanks to their ability to adhere to the epithelium, they are able to settle and replicate.
Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis Natto, are able to “close up like a hedgehog” when environmental conditions become unfavourable, and return to their vegetative state when the external environment becomes suitable again. This natural protective structure allows them to not only survive gastric acidity, but also environmental factors and/or those related to industrial production such as heat, humidity and mechanical stress.
